Pope John Paul II to be beatified on May 1, 2011

On May 1, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI will be leading the beatification of his predecessor Pope John Paul II or also know by his Polish name Karol Józef Wojtyla. This was reported at the website of Catholic News Agency (CNA), where it also stated that the decree for the beatification was approved by Pope Benedict XVI last January 14.

CNA also reported that one of the reasons of Pope John Paul II’s beatification was the miraculous healing of Sister Marie Simon Pierre Normand, who suffers and cured from Parkinson's disease. The nun from Little Sisters of Catholic Motherhood congregation in France asked for intersection through Pope John Paul II for the cure. The doctors who investigated the recovery of Sister Normand declared it scientifically unexplainable.

The Polish Catholic leaders declared their joy after receiving the news of the beatification of Pope John Paul II.

Pope John Paul II was a Polish Cardinal elected as Pope in October 6, 1978. He succeeded John Paul I and won the hearts of the youth after establishing World Youth Day. He died at the age of 84 on April 5, 2005 and succeeded by Pope Benedict XVI.

Debates on RH Bill Continues between Religious Personalities and RH Advocates

Against the background of one of the Constitution’s guarded principles on the separation of Church and State (Art. II, Sec. 6), the discussions on the Reproductive Health Bills have so far included not only a legal dimension, but religious, moral, human rights, ethical and medical dimensions as well. A series of events triggered an increase of discussion about the RH Bill including what advocates are saying as interference of the Catholic Church in government policies particularly on RH and the provision of family planning services.

In a recent forum entitled, Search for Common Ground: Religion, State and the RH Bill organized by the Ateneo School of Law and the Forum for Family Planning and Development, religious leaders from some of the biggest faith based groups in the country came together to discuss the Reproductive Health Bill together with known advocates of the measure. The forum was held at the Ateneo School of Law on November 26.

Fr. Joaquin Bernas S.J. , Dean Emeritus of the Ateneo School of Law, joins other religious leaders which include Bishop Leo Alconga of the Philippines for Jesus Movement, Bishop Rodrido Tano of the Philippine Association of Bible and Theological Schools and Amina Rasul Bernardo of the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy.

Facing the panel of religious leaders are some of the most staunch advocates of Reproductive Health such as Benjamin de Leon, President of Forum for FP and Development and newly appointed POPCOM Commissioner; former health Secretary Dr. Alberto Romualdez and Cong. Kaka Bag-ao, author of one of six RH Bills filed in Congress.

All the religious groups in the panel expressed their support for the RH Bill. Even Fr. Joaquin Bernas said that in the last Congress, he was in favor of the RH Bill if some provisions are changed. But with the current Congress, he said that so many versions of the bill have been filed and he wonders which RH Bill is able to consider some issues he raised from the perspective of Catholics.

Dr. Alberto Romualdez , shared his disappointment with the current situation. “I am Catholic, raised and educated in Catholic schools. But when I was a medical student, I realized that not all Filipinos are treated equal especially by the health sector.” This thinking was further confirmed when he served as DOH Secretary. “I believe it is not right that there is a woman who has access to all information and services she needs while another doesn’t. Those women in the lowest 20% have no access to information and the means to obtain family planning information and supplies.”

Romualdez also expressed hope and optimism that that the discussion on RH will take a turn toward civility and reason especially after the recent statement of His Holiness in the book Benedict XVI, Light of the World, where the Pope is quoted as saying that condom use is “a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality.” This is in reference to the question on the prevention and spread of HIV infection.

Bishop Tano also expressed his disappointment saying that, " the RH Bill has taken too much time and resources. Last Congress, Legislators deliberately chose to dribble the ball and not shoot it."

Meanwhile, De Leon also said that the RH Bill has been around for 16 years and during this time, thousands of lives have been lost. “RH is not just about family planning. But the problem is anti-choice groups make it all about contraceptives. They also make it seem that Filipinos are not capable of making the right decisions if presented with options. I think that this is insulting.”

“We are challenging our lawmakers to stop playing politics and just do their jobs. Let the RH bill be deliberated and voted on. They owe us this as the true voting public.” De Leon said in closing.

DOH Sec. Cabral on AIDS, Maternal Health, Child Mortality and Church

March 13, Makati City – During the Mulat Pinoy Kapihan series of Philippine Center for Population and Development (PCPD) and the Probe Foundation in Bo’s Coffee in Glorietta 5, Makati City on the topic of population and health, the controversial Department of Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral answered questions concerning HIV/AIDS, maternal health issue and child mortality and her debate with the Catholic Church.

Watch the full video of my interview with DOH Sec. Cabral.

Sec Cabral is a brilliant woman who's in my opinion a champion of women and health care in DOH and know how to stand if it is needed despite of conflict of belief and faith.

Book of Eli: hope springs in the midst of darkness

Warner Bros Pictures and Columbia Pictures brings a film that tells a story how faith and hope blooms amidst of chaos. The Book of Eli is an apocalyptic action film directed by Albert and Allen Hughes, written by Gary Whitta, and starring Denzel Washington (Eli), Gary Oldman (Carnegie), Jennifer Beals (Claudia) and Mila Kunis (Solara). Book of Eli is now showing in all Cinemas nationwide.

The Book of Eli is set thirty years after a great war that purges half of mankind in the world. Eli (Washington) possessed the book that Carnegie is looking for, the last remaining Bible. Carnegie believed that anyone who owns the Bible will have a power to rule the world, the world of illiterates and savage. Carnegie and Eli was the only person who was able to read unlike others. Eli refuses to give the book and goes west to fulfill his mission, the mission he believes empowered by his faith.

Charismatic, this is the only word I can use to describe the film. The role of Washington shows his dedication in life to fulfill a task with a strong faith and dedication. The storyline is simple but the way how it was delivered along with the character's line shows a broader perspective of the story. Walk with faith in you're heart and you will never walk alone, is the message that Eli convene to his viewers. Yes it maybe an action film but the main heart of story is about keeping the faith.

Book of Eli is showing in all SM Cinemas and other theaters nationwide beginning March 17.

Celebrate Sinulog, Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang Festival this January

In line with the celebration of Sinulog Festival on January 8-17 in Cebu and Dinagyang Festival on January 18 - 24 in Iloilo ABS-CBN Regional Network Group launches their January Festival Campaign with their tagline Bilib sa Kulturang Pinoy.

The Sinulog Festival is held on the third week of January on Cebu which on this year the celebration begins on January 8th until the 17th. The festival honors the Child Jesus or the Sto. Niño. The celebration is done through a ritual dance that commemorates the pagan origin of the Cebuanos and their acceptance of the Roman Catholic faith. The Sinulog Festival features street parade where participants wear bright colored costumes and dancing with the rhythm of drums, gongs and trumpets. The festival usually held at the Cebu City Sport Complex. The festival lasts for 9 days in which it reaches its peak during the fluvial procession in the morning and followed by a foot procession in the afternoon where it ends at the Basilica Minore de Sto. Nino de Cebu (Basilica of the Holy Child of Cebu) and re-enactment of the Christianizing of Cebu takes place. Sinulog came from a Cebuano word “sulog” which means like water current movement which shows on the street parade where participants forward-backward movement (two forward and one backward). The Sinulog festival is also open to other Visayan and Mindanao participants. This year ABS-CBN Regional Network Group brings Kapamilya artist like Banana Split funny men John Prats and Jason Gainza and ‘And I Love You Goodbye’ star Angelica Panganiban with their special production numbers and a special meet and greet with their fans at the Ayala Parking, Cebu City on January 16, 4pm for the Kapamilya Karavan in Cebu. Cebu City celebrates it 30th Anniversary this year.

After the fun and excitement on Sinulog Festival in Cebu City, it’s Iloilo’s turn to celebrate its devotion to the Holy Child on their Dinagyang Festival on January 18 – 24. The Dinagyang started when Rev. Fr. Ambrosio Galindez, introduced the devotion to the Sto. Niño in 1967, as Fr. Sulpicio Enderez gave a replica of the original image of the Santo Niño de Cebu to the Confradia del Santo Niño de Cebu, in San Jose Parish in Iloilo City. Dinagyang came from a Hiligaynon word dagyang which means merry making. The event is divided into two major happenings, the Kasadyahan Street Dancing where it showcases performance from different towns in Iloilo and the Ati Ati Street Dancing an Aklan like Ati Atihan where participants are called tribe or tribus. Unlike the Sinulog, Dinagyang’s movement is fast and mimicking the stance of the Ati warriors of the past with the rhythm of the drum beats. Dinagyang traces its roots from Aklan Ati-Atihan.

ABS-CBN Regional Network Group's January Festival Campaign

Ati-Atihan in Aklan is celebrated every 3rd weekend of January. Called as the “Mother of the Philippine festivals,” the practice of street dancing dates back since time immemorial (or as some officials say, it’s a seven century old practice) by the Aklanons who dance with the beat of the drums at the streets of Kalibo. The participants are in black soot or outlandish costumes and the dance step is simple...just dance to the beat of the drums! Like Sinulog, Ati Atihan is originally a pagan festival where through dancing thay give homage to the anitos and as the Spanish missionaries came they included Christianity to the festival though the devotion to the Sto. Niño.

The only thing I can say is that the Filipino culture is rich and I am proud of it.
