Carey Mulligan stars in Never Let Me Go

After her stint in Public Enemy, Wall Street 2 and An Education, Carey Mulligan takes on a more serious and heartbreaking film adapted from the 2005 novel of Kazuo Ishiguru entitled Never Let Me Go. The drama movie adaptation was directed by Mark Romanek with a screenplay by Alex Garland. Also starring in the movie were Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley.

The film follows the three students of Hailsham; Kathy (Mulligan), Tommy (Garfield) and Ruth (Knightly). The three students stayed in the boarding school taking care of the fragile young bodies and studied arts and culture until they reach their adulthood and accomplished a certain task. Being idealistic and fragile, the three characters and the rest of the Hailsham students will encounter a brutal reality that they cannot live a regular life but instead they will be a support to all medically in need people who need organ donors. And the three of them were one of those created and raised to be donors and that is their lives should be.

Here’s the interview of Carey Mulligan talking about her views about her character and the story:

Q: What’s it like to make a film that deals with such heartbreaking material?
Carey Mulligan: We didn’t observe ourselves in this tragic world, we just played the parts, and so it was actually much lighter for us than it comes off. Part of what makes it so sad is that they live believing that this is their only choice, their only world, and there were a lot of very emotional scenes.

Q: A question that seems to crop up a lot with the story is why they don’t try and run away?
Mulligan: The book doesn’t deal with that. When people ask Ishiguru about it he always says that he wasn’t writing a book about people who ran away – he didn’t want to write a slave rebellion book. It’s about people who accept their circumstances and that’s probably more truthful than people running away.

Q: Your character, Kathy, is a clone. Does that affect how you play her?
Mulligan: No, because we never thought of ourselves as clones. The whole point of the story is that they are as human as people who are conceived naturally. So it was more about a group of orphans growing up together and not really having any kind of nurturing. They were just normal but segregated and treated differently, for no reason.

Q: Had you read the book before you were offered the part?
Mulligan: Yes, I read it when it came out. I always saw it as an amazing love story and then everything else played into it. It was also about friendship, between those two girls, and then the love story.

Q: Do you think success is changing you? We all have this perception what fame does…
Mulligan: No, I don’t think it’s changed me. Because I don’t feel famous in the classic sense of the word. When I’m doing press stuff, I wear heels and someone does my makeup, and it’s like a completely different side, a work thing, but then when I’m not working it’s completely different. And no one really photographs me when I’m on my own; I never get stopped in the street, so it’s not like Justin Bieber fame (laughs).

Q: You don’t read anything that’s written about you?
Mulligan: I read some reviews for the theatre I did and a couple of reviews for An Education but I didn’t read anything for Wall Street because I think if you start thinking about the end result and going into films thinking about how people perceive you then your choices are rubbish. You hate all the bad things that they say, so it’s just best just not to read any of it because then you can’t take any of it in.

Q: What’s your idea of a perfect day off?
Mulligan:
Well, I always get up early; once I’m awake that’s it. I’ve been in New York watching plays; I’ve been in London seeing my friends. I took French lessons for a couple of weeks and then got bored. I enjoyed being off for a while and then I got sick of it and I thought ‘I must do something active.’ It wasn’t like I spent four months travelling to Tibet or anything – I wish I had. I read a lot of scripts but just didn’t find anything until Drive came along.

Never Let Me Go is now showing (as of March 2) exclusively in all Ayala Cinemas by 20th Century Fox distributed by Warner Bros. Log on to www.sureseats.com for the movie’s schedule.

Before his stint in Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield will be doing a dystopian drama film that was based from 2005 novel of Kazuo Ishiguro entitled Never Let Me Go. The movie was directed by Mark Romanek and will be showing exclusively in all Ayala Malls Cinemas beginning March 2.

Nevel Let Me Go centers to the story of love and betrayal among childhood friends Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley), both students of Hailsham. Aside from differences and isolation, each character will face what other young adult; deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that will make them and break them apart.

With Never Let Me Go, Garfield won numerous awards including Breakthrough Actor Awards in Hollywood Awards, Supporting Actor (runner-up) in the Boston Film Critics Award and Ensemble Performance in Palm Springs Film Fest.

Secretariat: A movie of hope and fulfilling a promise

Ayala Mall Cinemas brings another movie that will touch everybody's heart and inspire its viewers not to give up in reaching their dreams. Secretariat is an inspirational movie that is based from the life of Penny Chenery Tweedy played by Diane Lane and her horse named Big Red who tried their luck at the 1973 Triple Crown competition. The movie is directed by Randall Wallace. It is showing in Ayala Mall Cinemas beginning December 1.

The movie follows the story of Penny who is a simple housewife, who took the responsibility of fulfilling a promise to her bed ridden father. With her wit and confidence she struggled to go beyond on that promise and bring home the pride for her family.

Not being bias about the movie and to Diane Lane who is one of my favorite actresses after her daring role in the 2002’s Unfaithful. The material (storyline) was simple but the execution was great and has depth. For those who wanted to be inspired, Secretariat is the movie to watch and should not been missed because of was been categorized as a feel good movie, though at first it can be more dramatic to adrenalin rushed ending.

In terms of the storyline, it’s a feel good movie and we all know what a feel good movie ends. But honestly, I enjoyed how it was delivered in terms of the phasing of the scenes and the mixture of the characters. A movie, which everyone should be watching and wanted to be inspired in their lives.

The Secretariat is now showing in Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3).

Movie viewing never been this fun as Ayala Malls Cinemas launched SureSeats online movie ticketing online since 2001, and the made it move innovative when they lauched the MPass card in 2003 a prepaid and fully reloaded card that allows movie goers purchase movie tickets online with the use of the card.

And last October 27, Ayala Malls Cinemas takes the movie experience a higher level where MPass users can now skip the ticket booth and go directly to the cinema where they had reserved and purchase their seats. The only thing that the MPass holder should do is it to present the card and the confirmation code of the purchase and they can now enter the cinema without the hassle of long lines and waiting. Aside from eliminating the long line on the ticket booth is that the MPass holder can choose the seats he or she wanted to purchase ahead of time.

Continuing their goal on making their movie goers happy, Ayala Malls Cinema now gives the MPass users order their food ahead of time from the accredited food stores located in the cinema floor. From the website they can now order the food and pay for it with the MPass prepaid card and same process of the cinema, they just need to present their card and confirmation number. Movie Review: Robert de Niro and Edward Norton’s Stone

Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) brings back Robert de Niro and Edward Norton with Milla Jovovich and Frances Conroy in the film entitled “Stone” an American thriller film that will discuss beliefs, relationships, conscience and freedom. The film is directed by John Curran and will be shown on October 27.

The film follows the struggle of Gerald "Stone" Creeson (Norton), an arsonist who wanted to have his parole and Jack Mabrey (De Niro), a correctional officer who handles the case of Stone and will be retiring soon on service. Stone uses his wife, Lucetta (Jovovich) to persuade Mabrey to complete his recommendation for the release of her husband. Aside from Stone, Mabrey is facing a personal conflict about his faith and his wife, Madylyn (Conroy).

The movie might be complicated in terms of the set up, but the conflict is simple, a person who wants his freedom so bad he uses all his resources just to have it. The film is so daring and it is not intended for younger children in both visuals and the use of words. There are two things I like in the movie and that is the irony of each character and the transition from one personality to another. It really gives impact to the story including the use of the “debating” persons in the background where it creates more tension of “silent” pure visual part of the movie.

Stone will be exclusively shown in all Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) on October 27.

Movie Review: George Clooney’s The American

After The Box, Ghost Writer, Crazy Hearts and Everybody’s Fine – all movies I enjoyed watching in in Ayala Mall Cinemas (Greenbelt 3 and Glorietta 4) comes a George Clooney film entitled “The American” and it that will be exclusively shown on the same cinema. The American is directed by Anton Corbin and starring George Clooney, Thekla Reuten, Violante Placido, Johan Leysen, Irina Björklund, and Paolo Bonacelli. The film is based from the 1990 novel of Martin Booth entitled A Very Private Gentlemen.

The movie follows the story of Jack (Clooney) who is an assassin hiding in an isolated town in Italy and hides with the name Edward. He accepts “job” from his associate named Pavel (Leysen) who commanded him to stay Castelvecchio instead Jack decided to stay in the another town where he met Father Benedetto (Bonacelli) the town priest and Clara (Placido) a prostitute. Jack discovers friendship with the priest and love to the prostitute, these things changes his views in life, but will it be a reason to turn his back from his present life and to create a new one?

One of the things I like in the movie is that it gives the viewers the opportunity to think which means it is less spoon feeding in terms of the conversation and story and more on visuals that are usually long shots and silent scenes. As for the film “The American” long shots and on the top view are prominent camera angles in the movie, making the viewers the observing rather than the conversing status in the character of Clooney where it preserves the mystery of his role which he is showing to Father Benedetto and Clara – hiding himself with the identity of Edward who is magazine photographer assigned in their town. Honestly, I enjoyed the movie it gives me the chance to peek in each character and sees the setting on a bigger and wider view rather than close up and restricted.

The American is now showing exclusively in Ayala Mall Cinemas (Greenbelt 3 and Glorietta 4).

Movie Review: The Ghost Writer

Summit Entertainment and Ayala Malls Cinema brings The Ghost Writer to Greenbelt 3 and Glorietta 4 exclusively beginning August 4. It is a political thriller film adapted from the 2007 novel of Robert Harris entitled The Ghost, directed by Roman Polanski and starring Ewan McGregor, Olivia Williams, Kim Cattrall, and Pierce Brosnan.

The Ghost Writer follows the quest of a successful non-political ghostwriter played by McGregor who was hired to complete the memoirs of the former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (Brosnan) who was allegedly connected to a war crime. With the promise of an opportunity of a lifetime, the “ghost” accepts the offer and discovers deeper secrets connected to the Lang and his family and team.

From The Box, Informant and Crazy Hearts that Ayala Mall exclusively shown in their cinema The Ghost Writer became an immediate favorite of mine where despite of some changes from the novel, the real essence of the story remains intact in the film. McGregor, Brosnan and Williams perfectly executed their roles and contribute to the mysterious flow of the story.

I am fan of juxtaposition or coincidence in terms of storyline and visuals, like majority in the scenes of The God Father, the storm or the mood of the weather contributes to the dilemma that all the characters is facing though out the film. Same the last part when papers flew after the ghost left the book launching (sorry for the spoiler) reveals the quest of McGregor to reveal the truth which everyone is waiting. The good thing with the movies like this is that it encourages the movie goers to think between transitions and cuts of the camera making them part of the film to visualize scenes and stories that are not shown in the screen. Yes, I am bias simply because I enjoyed the movie.

The Ghost Writer will be exclusively shown on Glorrieta 4 and Greenbelt 3 beginning August 4, distributed by Ayala Malls Cinema and Summit Entertainment.

Ewan McGregor is The Ghost Writer

After winning Best Director at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival, Summit Entertainment brings The Ghost Writer exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 and Greenbelt 3) beginning August 4. The political thriller directed by Roman Polanski and stars Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan is based from Robert Harris novel The Ghost that was published in 2007. Harris joins Polanski in writing the film adaptation of the novel.

The Ghost Writer is about a successful British writer (McGregor) who accepts the job to complete the journal of Adam Lang, a former British Prime Minister in exchange for a fortune that he needs badly. Since the beginning of the project the writer faces problems such as he didn’t know how to start because his predecessor died from an accident and the Lang was accused with authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA which is considered a war crime. The writer’s quest to finish the memoirs became harder and he begins to speculate that the former ghost writer was murdered.

Here is the transcript of Ewan McGregors interview regarding the movie:

Question: When you first were offered The Ghost Writer, were you familiar with the novel?
Ewan McGregor: I read the novel after I read the script. When you get an offer from Roman [Polanski], that's one of your better days and I liked it so much, I read the book. I saw the character of The Ghost really clearly when I read him in the script and I knew that Roman had written the script with [novelist] Robert Harris so I knew that they'd been involved in that together. So I trusted that it was the adaptation that they both wanted. In a way, that's perfect. You might not even bother with the book.

Q: Were you tempted to not read it to avoid subconsciously cribbing from the book?
McGregor: I have done that in the past where reading the book is just not that helpful, but I spoke to Robert about the way I wanted to play him. I would've just played him with my [Scottish] accent but Robert didn't want him to be from Scotland because of the reference to [Prime Minister Adam] Lang's family being Scottish. I still don't think it would have made much difference, but he didn't want that. But once I'd read the script, I had him in my head so I suppose that's who I saw when I read the book. I was just seeing the same guy.

Q: You were quoted as saying that Polanski is always giving actors interesting notes on their performances. What did you learn from him in this regard?
McGregor: He's always pushing you. The first scene we shot on the first day lasted 22 hours. Just on and on and on. Whenever there's a new set or new location or new actor, it would take Roman a little while to warm up and get it in his head how we were going to shoot it. He said to Tim [Preece, who plays Roy] about one line, "When you say that line, be a little moved" and nobody quite knew what he meant. Sometimes you think with Polanski it's just a whim -- just what's flitted through his head -- but it was a genius note. I just found he was always pushing to find the truth. Some of the lines I delivered because they're how he wanted me to deliver them, not necessarily how I would have done it myself.

Q: Are you worried that external events will alter how the film is perceived?
McGregor: I hope not, but I don't know the answer to that question. My hope is that the film is viewed for the film's sake and the people that might not go and see it because of Polanski's situation might not have gone to see it anyway. But of course I would never dream of telling people what to do or think. That's not for me to say.

Q: When you read the script, how much of the political message informed your decision to take the role?

McGregor: When I first read it, I didn't see the bigger political picture. I was looking at it through The Ghost's eyes and I'm not political. I'm really not very interested in politicians. I just find it really boring.

Q: Like The Ghost?
McGregor: Yeah, that was quite handy. So I wasn't as aware as I am now about the political message in it but I really agree with it. I'm delighted that it says that our politicians should be answerable for their actions. There's a political relationship at the center of the film between Lang and his ex-Cabinet Minister who's now getting him into trouble and the idea that politicians are just back-biting and not to be trusted is probably pretty dead-on.

The Ghost Writer also stars Olivia Williams, Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Hutton, Jim Belushi, and Eli Wallach and will be shown in Ayala Malls Cinema exclusively here in the Philippines beginning August 4, 2010.
