From November 18 to December 4, Spotlight Artists Centre brings Nestor Torre and Gines Tan’s Magsimula Ka at the Music Museum, bringing back the golden years of OPM music. The musical play features new and veteran performers like Ciara Sotto, Myke Salomon, Poppert Bernadas, Fred Lo and Kyla Rivera, ably supported by theater luminaries Ana Feleo, Tricia Amper-Jimenez, Sherwin Sozon, Sheng Belmonte, Gerald Napoles, Sophiea Reyes, Cheeno Macaraig, Rafael Sudayan, Ava Santos, Kakki Teodoro, Heidi Arima, Carlos Canlas, Pamela Imperial and Migs Ramirez.
Magsimula Ka was originally staged at the CCP Little Theater in the 80’s. The musical play follows the lives of three individuals who wanted to fulfill their dreams to be a singer and music composer. That dream came in after graduation and they tried their luck in the Philipop, a local singing and composing competition who awards new OPM performers.
It was great to see the masterpiece of Nestor Torre and Gines Tan on stage, and reaching out to the younger audience. I was hoping that the younger crowd will appreciate Magsimula Ka and give way as an inspiration on bringing back the Philippine music industry back on its high years. As for the characters, Ciara Sotto, Myke Salomon, Poppert Bernadas, Fred Lo and Sheng Belmonte they did great on stage.
Nestor Torre and Gines Tan’s Magsimula Ka will run on November 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, and December 2, 3 and 4, 8:00 p.m., with matinees on November 20, 27 and December 4 at the Music Museum. It is directed by Robert Seña. The musical play was produced by Isay Alvarez-Seña, Tricia Amper-Jimenez and Carl Balita, with Boni Juan, set designer; Georcelle Dapat, choreographer; JonJon Villareal, lighting design and Krina Cayabyab, vocal coach. For more details, visit www.spotlightartistscentre.com or call 899-8089. Tickets are available at http://www.ticketworld.com.ph.

Last night, I finally saw Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats: Now and Forever in Manila at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in Pasay City for a huge fan of stage plays especially musicals it is a dream come true and of course seeing Lea Salonga doing the Grizabella role. It was the second time I saw her performed in the stage, the first one is during the presentation of Ms. Saigon in Manila in 2000 and yes I did skipped my lunch and snack breaks to avail a ticket to see the performance and my mother didn’t know that until now.
Going back to the Cats, the musical play is based from the 1939 children novel of T.S. Eliot entitled Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and it was first performed at the West End Theater, London in 1981 and Broadway, New York in 1982 and now it is here in Manila until August 22. Lea Salonga will be joining Shaun Rennie (Munkustrap), John Ellis (Old Deuteronomy) and John O' Hara (Rum Tum Tugger). The story follows the lives of the members of Jellicle Tribe where Grizabella abandoned during her younger years as the most glamorous cat in her generation, and after facing the sufferings and pains caused by the world to her she returns to the tribe facing the disapproval of its members. The musical play features and made the song Memory popular where Salonga will be singing and the translated version (in Filipino) was performed by an Aussie cast member named Alyse Davies who plays Sillabub, the translation was done by Pete Lacaba a multi-awarded Filipino poet.
The performance was beautiful and it was the second performance I know that it interacts with the audience next to Master Class of Terrence McNally. In that way it creates an atmosphere between the viewers and the performers in form of attachment to the story especially when the performers are in their character.
The musical play was presented in 300 cities in over 26 countries including Vienna (Austria), Los Angeles (USA), Sydney Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and Horbart (Australia), Mexico City (Mexico), Madrid (Spain), Warsaw (Poland), Singapore, South Korea, Hongkong, China and São Paulo (Brazil). It won Olivier Awards for Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement of the Year in Musicals in 1981 and the 1983 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Book of a Musical, Original Score, Featured Actress, Costume Design, Direction and Lightning Design.
Cats: Now and Forever in Manila is extended until August 22. Here are the details on the last 2 weeks performance of Cats; Matinee Performance that runs every Saturday (3:00pm) and Sunday (2:30pm) the ticket price are PhP7000, PhP5000, PhP3500, PhP2000 and PhP1000, for Evening Performance that runs on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (8:00pm) and Sunday (7:30pm) the ticket price are PhP6000, PhP4500, PhP3000, PhP1500, and PhP750 and lastly for Friday and Saturday Night Performance that starts on 8:00PM the ticket price are PhP7000, PhP5000, PhP3500, PhP2000, Php1000. July 21, Makati City – Master Class Philippines director and veteran stage actor Michael Willians formally re-introduce his team Theater Down South at the California Pizza Kitchen in Glorietta to present their line ups for this year including one original musical play that they created. Williams is the president and the creative and artistic director of the company and the primary aim of having theater performance in the suburbs and south metro is to encourage the theater habit among the families and the youth in the south who sometimes experience difficulties in watching plays in Makati and Ortigas because it’s far from where they live.
This year, Theater Down South will be doing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) which will be performed at the Insular Life Theater, Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang on October 2, 3, 8, 9, 24, 30 (8PM). They will be also doing a William Shakespeare masterpiece entitled A Midsummer Night’s Dream which will be open for school purchase, but according to Williams they will be opening it soon to the public, where they added a touch of Asian approach on the performance to make it more appealing to the Filipino audience. Lastly, Theater Down South will be doing an original piece created by Williams and the company’s vice president and musical director Joonee Garcia entitles The Princess and the Red Carp on August 22, 29 - September 5, 12, 19 (3PM) at the Insular Life Theater, Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang. The story of the original piece created by Williams and Garcia is about Cinderella like story where the red carp provides Yeh Hsien, a young girl with clothes, jewelry, and the pair of tiny golden slippers. Unfortunately, her step mother eats the red carp and the only thing that will help the handsome Your Emperor remember her is through the golden slippers.
Aside from the foreign stories that the company will be doing on their performances, Williams shares that they are now studying local based folktales and zarzuelas to encourage the youth from the south to engage themselves with the Philippine culture. Among their pass performances includes Rapunzel and Treasure Island and for those who wanted to watch their three presentations and for sponsorships Theater Down South at (02)5056380, E-mail: info@theaterdownsouth.com, or visit www.theaterdownsouth.com, tickets are also available at Ticketworld outlets just call (02)8919999 or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.
