La Mesa Ecopark opens news swimming complex

One of the public properties damaged by Typhoon Ondoy has been resurrected and revitalized.

The new La Mesa Ecopark swimming complex in Quezon City was inaugurated Saturday (Mar 5) in the hope of attracting more revenue for the continuous preservation and protection of La Mesa Watershed.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, QC Vice-Mayor Joy Belmonte, former Senator Jamby Madrigal, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Chairman Ramon Alikpala, and ABS-CBN Foundation Managing Director Gina Lopez formally opened the new facility to the public.

“La Mesa is important because it not only provides escape for the people of Metro Manila but it also reminds us of the value of our watershed and the importance of protecting it,” said Alikpala.

According to Lopez, the swimming complex was destroyed when Typhoon Ondoy hit Metro Manila. It was submerged in floodwaters in September 2009. The construction of the new pool complex was made possible through the Senate Priority Development Fund of Madrigal during her time in the Senate.

The La Mesa Watershed, a property owned by MWSS, is the primary source of drinking water of about 12 million Metro Manila residents. It also has 2,000 hectares of forest, the last remaining one of its size in Metro Manila and serves as its carbon sink.

The swimming pool has been one of the park’s main attractions and high revenue-earners, attracting large volumes of customer especially during summer vacation. With a new six lane standard short course (25m) fresh water pool and two saltwater kiddy/wading pools, La Mesa Ecopark hopes to meet this demand and increase revenues while at the same time upholding safety standards.

Due to lack of funds, illegal settling, poaching and logging, the watershed came into disrepair and ruin in the 1990s until ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. created Bantay Kalikasan (Nature Watch) and, in partnership with the MWSS and the Quezon City Local Government, undertook the Save La Mesa Watershed Project in 1999.

To sustain the Save La Mesa Watershed Project, Bantay Kalikasan rehabilitated and renovat

ICTY Staff in Football Action For World AIDS Day

Members of the media are invited to join the Tribunal on Friday, 26 November as it sends off its football team across the English Channel for a five-day tour in the United Kingdom. The UN Workers Football Team will be playing a series of friendly games in an effort to help eradicate stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS and who play sports.

From 27 to 30 November, the UN Workers Football Team will play against the UK Members of Parliament, the Trade Union Congress, as well as teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

The UK football tour is part of the ICTY Staff Union’s recently launched social campaign S’porting Lives. The first campaign hopes to raise awareness of the unwarranted stigma people living with HIV/AIDS face when trying to participate in sports.

S’porting Lives’ campaign will conclude on World AIDS Day, 1 December, in Cape Town, where S’porting Lives has collaborated with Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), a leading HIV/AIDS organisation in South Africa. The TAC team will play a local team to support S’porting Lives’ international cause.

The UN team began training in October 2010, and is comprised of players of 14 nationalities, representing all organs of the Tribunal, including the Defence. It is a team of legal professionals, support staff and interns who have come together, volunteering their own time and money, to raise awareness for a common cause. It is supported by HIVsport, Educational Sports Forum, FIFPro and the Professional Footballers Association.

Watch the Live Streaming of Pacquiao vs Margarito for Free via PLDT WatchPad

On November 14 (US sched: Nov 13), watch how boxing history unfolds at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas as the eight-time boxing champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao from the Philippines will fight Antonio Margarito of Mexico for the WBC World Super Welterweight title.

I always enjoy watching boxing fight especially if it includes our boxers like Manny Pacquiao and I am excited to watch it on November 14. I grew up with my uncles and my father watching it during Sunday lunch time but I hate the long commercial breaks. Speaking of Manny Pacquiao I am excited for him bringing home another title for the country and I am crossing my fingers that he will won the fight.

It is important for us Filipinos to see this fight and joining Pacquiao in his quest to strengthen the Filipino Pride among us aside from the title. Sadly, most of the telecast here in the Philippines is delayed and we can not fully enjoy the blow by blow fight of Pacquiao and Margarito because of long commercials that spoils the momentum of the adrenalin rush we had while watching it.

Checking online, I saw PLDT WatchPad offering this premium service to their loyal subscribers who will upgrade to Plan 1299 that has speed connection of more than 768 kbps which is perfect for live online streaming. After upgrading and for those who is already in the Plan 1299 may now reserve their slot watch the Pacquiao-Margarito boxing fight in PLDT WatchPad.

They are also giving the said premium offer to new clients who will subscribe to the PLDT WatchPad service until November 8. Where aside from the premium service like the Pacquiao-Margarito Boxing Fight, new subscribers can enjoy watching more than sic channels online and play online games with faster connection to make the playing and watching experience more fun and enjoyable.

For those who want to know more about PLDT WatchPad and all its exciting promos and freebies join the PLDT WatchPad Facebook Page and follow them on Twitter.

Join the 2nd Quezon City International Marathon on December 7!

The most anticipated running event is happening in Quezon City on December 5 this year. Now on its second year, the Quezon City International Marathon is organized by the Executive Runners Club of the Philippines (RUNNEX) and is supported by the city’s local government headed by Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Touted to be the biggest and most exciting international marathon this year, recreational, professional and beginner runners will outrace each other as they pound the road to the 5 km, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km finish line. As with last year, thousands of runners are expected to register from October 4 to November 7 for the different race categories. Registration sites will be at R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street, Chris Sports outlets, Secondwind in Ortigas, the Quezon City Hall and the RUNNEX office at the Bahay ng Alumni in UP Diliman.

Registration fees are P650 for the 42 km, P500 for the 21 km and P350 for the 5 km and 10 km distance. Race kits will be released on November 27 and 28 at the Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines, Diliman. A finisher’s medal will be awarded to participants who will cross the 42km and 21km finish line.

Considered an important landmark in the city, the iconic Quezon Memorial Circle will serve as the start and finish lines for the race. Depending on the category, the race route will traverse the famous landmarks that make Quezon City a place with many attractions. Known as the widest road in the area, runners will run along Commonwealth Avenue and pass through a portion of La Mesa Dam Eco Park, a venue providing for healthful outdoor recreation and a true forest experience. It is a living classroom and laboratory for environmental education and aims to be a center for biodiversity conservation. The road back will bring the runners inside the University of the Philippines, a favorite running spot because of the tree-lined roads that offer shade to hot and weary runners. Here, the Oblation may be viewed, another of the city’s famous icons.

Inspired by the huge turnout of last year’s Quezon City International Marathon, RUNNEX teamed up with Neville Manaois to ensure a safe and unique running experience for all participants. Doing away with the usual come-on gimmicks of other races, QCIM will instead focus on the safety and needs of the runners by making sure water stations abound and marshals are deployed to ensure that the action on the road is constantly monitored. With the meticulous and careful planning put into this event, local and foreign runners may look forward to a safe and fun filled run from their first step to the finish.

For more details, please contact the Runnex secretariat at (02)435-5291, or visit the site www.runnex.org or QCIM2’s official Facebook Page www.facebook.com/qcim2

Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig takes on Estero de San Miguel in Malacañang

A week after the new administration stepped in, Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) decided to embark on the rehabilitation of a tributary just a few meters behind Malacañang—the two-kilometer Estero de San Miguel.

Estero de San Miguel is one of the 48 tributaries that drains directly into the Pasig River and contributes to its pollution.

KBPIP recently celebrated its first anniversary with a boat ride along another Pasig River tributary, the Estero de Paco, a three-kilometer stretch of creek. This was the first time it was done and it showcased the recent success of KBPIP on the tributary—relocation of the informal settlers, riprapping of the easement along the estero, and dredging.

“Look at what we did in Estero de Paco,” said ABS-CBN Foundation Managing Director and KBPIP Project Director Gina Lopez. “Now we want to replicate it in all the various areas. You can't clean the river if you don't clean what goes into it.”

“So the game plan is that we have to rehabilitate the tributaries first—the esteros—before we move on to the Pasig River,” Lopez further explained.

To raise funds and create awareness on its seven-year campaign to clean the Pasig River, KBPIP organized a marathon which had a turnout of 23,000 participants last November 2009 and which brought donors to KBPIP.

Believing another and a bigger event can further boost the cause, KBPIP is putting up a fun run called “Run for the Pasig River” slated on October 10, 2010 (10.10.10) with the expertise of race directors Eric Imperio, Rio dela Cruz, and Thumby Remigio.

“We always want to grow bigger. So on 10.10.10, we not only decided to put on a marathon, we have also decided to break the Guinness Book of Records by going for 120,000 registered participants! We’re flying in an adjudicator from Guinness, so they can record the event,” said Lopez.

Lopez is confident that the success of 10.10.10 fun run and the rehabilitation of Estero de San Miguel will be enough to get the support of President Aquino and the rest of the Filipino public.

“At the end of the day, Pasig River is not my river,” Lopez further said. “It’s everyone's river, it's everyone's responsibility. And if everyone feels the same way and takes it on and has a keen sentiment, then there is no way, no way, that that river will not be cleaned,” Lopez ended
