Almost two years has passed since AP Renewables, Inc. (APRI), a wholly owned subsidiary of AboitizPower Corp. won the bid for the 747-megawatt (MW) Tiwi-Makban geothermal power complex. Since then, a lot of people have benefited, not only the employees themselves, but also the host communities.

Alter Space: Play and learn to reduce your carbon footprint

ALTER SPACE, THE NEW FILIPINO-DEVELOPED Facebook game, is a fun way for gamers to learn practical tips on Earth-friendly living. This means a lifestyle that helps reduce the effects of global warming, climate change and carbon emissions on the planet. These tips are presented as part of various tasks and mini-games that the gamer plays. Alter Space was developed by AboitizPower to educate gamers on Carbon Footprint Reduction (more on that later).

Azkals’ Anton del Rosario supports AboitizPowers’ Alter Space

Aside from the CosPlay Goddess Alodia Gosiengfiao, Azkals Anton del Rosario is one of the endorsers of AboitizPowers’ Alter Space. Alter Space is the very first Filipino made Facebook game that will encourage online users to be aware of the carbon footprints and to protect the environment.

"Our environment is not in a good state right now, especially with all the pollution around us. We can all feel its effect in our lives. People need to learn how to save energy, how to recycle, and to cut down on the things that aren't unnecessary," Del Rosario explained.

Alter Space was officially launched in Facebook last February 25 and gained supports all Filipino users and along with other non-Filipino environmental advocates. The game aims to challenge users to create their own planet and protect it by being conscious with the use of energy and resources that leads to the increase of carbon footprints. It also gives awareness on several natural alternative source of energy like solar energy and hydro electricity which is one of the environmental advocacy of AboitizPowers with their Cleanergy project.

"I feel that people will like this game because it's like building your own world, and people get attached to these kinds of games. In this game, you're nurturing not just the person, but also their environment," Anton explained

Learning to save that One Earth through Alter Space

With so many organizations standing up and speaking up about responsibility in taking care of the environment, it is very crucial for those in the non-choosing group and the youth who haven't showing their stand yet on the said issue. It very obvious that we are very much affected by the issue of climate change and one of the major contributors of it were improper waste disposal, energy waste and carbon footprint.

I had to chance to explore so many beautiful things and scenery in the Philippines, but it is very alarming that most of it is no longer the same of what we used to be. Being an active advocate for environmental awareness, I learned from WWF-Philippines how climate change affect our seas and that is through the corals and fishes which are starting to deteriorate and become extinct including our green sea turtle. I saw how magnificent and beautiful our seas here in the Philippines, the one in Taal, Batangas and Batanes, but sadly with our lack of responsibility we are putting it on perilous situation.

There are so many advocates, who were giving all their lives and passion in taking care of the environment, but it doesn't stop there. How about the youth, the younger generation who instead joining other environmental advocates and activists are staying in front of their computer very fascinated with social media like twitter and facebook. Being the part of the Top 5 user of Facebook with almost 2 Million accounts, AboitizPower sees the opportunity of that number in reaching out to the younger market in making them understand on their responsibility with the environment. With the concept of Alter Space in Facebook, it will set awareness among the younger sector of the society including the yuppies on the facts about carbon footprints and how they will lessen it. The Alter Space is a five-level Facebook game that will challenge the online gamers and facebook users to balance happiness, money and carbon footprints in the planet to avoid disaster. This is a symbolical presentation of earth and our responsibility to take care of it. One of the things I am looking forward with Alter Space is that how AboitizPower will bridge their project to academe and directly use it as part of the curriculum of students as early as Grade 3 students in elementary and various refreshers in other levels to strengthen the campaign. Aside from the Alter Space, I was hoping that AboitizPower will complete their project in creating a layman presentation of carbon footprint info sheet and calculator so that the younger and less technical audience will further more understand the importance of this advocacy and how it will help in taking care of the environment.

I do support this endeavor of AboitizPower, as I support their campaign on Cleanergy, a product that results from renewable clean energy which is less contributor of carbon footprint, waste materials and usage of resources. So if you wanted to reach out in informing others the importance of the this campaign visit http://apps.facebook.com/alterspacegame and use the application and share it to others.

Alodia Gosiengfiao promotes Alter Space

Cosplay Goddess Alodia Gosiengfiao with Anton del Rosario of the AZCALS promotes the first Filipino made Facebook game application that promotes environmental awareness. The game called Alter Space and it was created by AboitizPower Corporation and aims to educate people on what carbon foot print (CF) is, how people can lower their CF emission and help preserve the Earth’s resources. Aboitiz Power Corp. is the country’s leading producer of Cleanergy, brand that is clean and renewable energy and with the game they developed it will encourage the youth who were mostly Facebook users to do their part in protecting the environment.

According to Alodia, she enjoyed playing the game and she finds it challenging. "The great thing about Alter Space is that it's not just any typical game that you play. In a creative way, it actually teaches people to be conscious of the carbon footprint they produce, which means changing their habits for the good of the Earth," she added.

The main objective of Alter Space is to take cake of their own little planet by balancing Happiness, Current-cy (term use for money) and Carbon Footprint. To assure balance, they should fulfill the entire task assigned to them in a particular level. Aside from the task there are challenges like disasters and enemies that will affect the percentage of CF which player should maintain it low.

"First of all, from the sneak peek alone, I knew I would enjoy playing the game. And I'm sure many people from all sectors will, too. Imagine, moms will be able to learn how to lower their electric bills and see their kids discover the importance of conservation and indeed an innovative way to help promote environment-friendly practices, especially among young people” Alodia ended.

To find out more about Alter Space and Alodia, check out www.facebook.com/alterspacegame and visit www.aboitizpower.com to know more about the projects of Aboitiz Power Corporation.
