The Irony behind the inspirations of AmBisyon 2010

Last April 6, I had an opportunity to watch AmBisyon 2010 in the Dream Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) before its actual telecast on ANC, ABS-CBN and Studio 23. With film critics, social advocates, press and news team of ABS-CBN, we witness the unfolding of truth, irony and reality behind what was imposed to be “Strong Republic” and the promises of the forth coming Election on May 10, 2010.

AmBisyon 2010, which I had interpreted, are made of two words coined as one: Ambisyon (ambition) or goal and bisyon (Vision) or dream. Two words when combined could make everyone relate and also dreaming of a certain goal we wanted to achieve this election. There were 20 filmmakers who participated on this short film festival of the ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs (ANC) headed by Vice President for News and Current Affairs Maria Reesa and Patricia Evangelista, producer of this project. Each film reflects the issues concerning health, poverty, education, economy, corruption, environment, population security, justice and human rights.

There are ten films that caught my interest; Jeffrey Jeturian - Ganito Tayo Ngayon, Paano Tayo Bukas?, Henry Frejas - Hanap Buhay, Brillante Mendoza - Ayos Ka, Jon Red - Pandesal, Sardinas, Gatas, Emerson Reyes - Ang Telenobela ni Juan at Luzviminda, Jerrold Tarog – Faculty, Ditsi Carolino - Lupang Hinarang Sumilao, Kiri Dalena - Requiem for M, Ellen Ramos - Wasteland and Anna Matutina – Hingalo. Most of the films I enjoyed and struck me the most are those that are showing the irony of what the present government calls strong government.

Jeturian, Mendoza, Dalena and Red shows this irony; where Jeturian and Mendoza shows the opposite what the main character tells or shows in the film in his/her surroundings where it depicts the malignancy of poverty in the society and the corruption of power. Reyes and Ramos used visuals to get the attention of its viewers on the present scenario of the cost of education and the issue if Juan dela Cruz really prepared to receive his democracy. While Tarog, Frejas, Matutina and Corolino shows the present scenario of a particular social problem; how a person should stand on issues whether to be an active participant or a quite protester (Tarog), issue on health that it is rampant the society where discrimination and the lack of facilities in the hospitals especially in government owned (Matutina), Carolino shows the issue of the Sumilao Farmers and how they struggle to earn the land that right for them and Frejas shares the irony of labor where this time in his film, his character can only live in the lost of someone else death.

Here is the complete list of the films for AmBisyon 2010:

1. Jade Catro - Hindi Ako Makatulog Pag Wala Ka Sa Tabi Ko
