Yahoo Philippines launches Purple Thumb

February 16, Manila Intercon, Ayala Avenue, Makati City - Yahoo Philippines launches its Purple Thumb campaign that will widen the perspective of the Filipino online users on how social media can affect their voting behavior this 2010 election. We saw how the social media influences the voting decision of the Americans that led to Barack Obama's victory. Yahoo Philippines partners with various online advocates and mainstream media to discuss how social media changes the phasing of news and decision making among the online users in the net.

Mainstream media members like Howie Severino of GMAnews.tv and Arlene Burgos of ABS-CBNnews.com discusses how citizen journalism helps in bringing the news on real time. Both network is using a user generated content system where they use platforms like mms on mobile, emails, and social media like Facebook, Meme, Multiply and Twitter to get the content from what they call netizens. UGC plays a vital role during the death of President Corazon Aquino, Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng disaster, and this year 2010 Election. Aside from the common social media platforms, they also use other Google maps, spreadsheets, Flickr and YouTube as source of content submitted by the citizen journalist. According to Alan Soon, the Managing Editor of Yahoo Southeast Asia this is the era of what we call the “now” revolution, where there is urgency on the news and the demand of getting it on real time. But in regards of the content submitted to main stream, there is a requirement that they need to verify all information they receive to avoid false information that leads to public confusion. Like Soon says, based on the famous Spiderman line great powers comes with great responsibility, social media can be powerful but the effect depends on how it was utilize.

Social Media became a trend to all, for uploading personal photos, videos and journals to more socio-political related content. Juana Change is one of the perfect examples of online content that shows opinion in regards of political concerns. Even politicians sees it as a tool for their campaign, it is cheap and it doesn't falls on election guidelines that limits them on a particular amount of time like on television and radio, or it has specific placement on print and on streets. Social media like Facebook, Meme, Multiply, Twitter, websites, blogs and others became a battle ground among the likes of Noynoy Aquino, Manny Villar and other 2010 political aspirants. They created online community, fan groups and alerts to get the attention of their supporters on the net. With the growing numbers of politicians going in the net for campaign, the more online users especially the netizens which are online watchdogs remain vigilant on what happen and sharing the news on real time and sometimes this netizens are more ruthless with their opinions toward a certain issue. Ellen Tordesillas mention that there is nothing private on social media. But she firmly states that if posting it on social media all the photos, videos, and content, we should ask permission to the owner first.

Yes the internet plays a vital role on the 2010 election, but we are all intelligent enough to discern which information we will take on our system and which is us not let me end this entry with Francis Bacon’s line “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.” The decision lies on us alone if we let things from the internet persuade us or not.
