Utilizing Social Media as alternative marketing tool

Last April 22, at the Manila Intercontinental Hotel in Makati City, Rosan Cruz of Assistant Vice President of Group Public Relations, BENPRES Holdings Corporation shares her insights on how to utilize social media for business as an additional marketing tool.

Cruz relates her projects in some of the BENPRES Holdings Corporation campaigns like Lopez Link, Lopez Memorial Museum and Sagip Kapamilya. In spite of the big projects the handles are the limitations on budget. Lopez Link is a monthly publication of the Lopez Group of Companies where it contains corporate information and news and entertainment buzz from ABS-CBN, one of the companies under the Lopez Group. She conducted a survey on what does employee do on the paper (Lopez Link) after reading it, and majority says that it employee take the papers home while only percent says that they throw it or left it somewhere. Aside from the increasing the number of publication, they also created a website where employees and other partners can visit Lopez Link online and it drives traffic coming from various locations as Cruz affirms during her talk.

With other projects she handles, it is hard for her to create a big press conference that requires feeding large crowd along with the venue. Until she discovers the use of social media where she invites bloggers, utilize social networks like twitter, facebook and others. The awareness of the campaign increases without releasing to much money for the campaign materials and TV ads the usual and common marketing tool for big companies. Some of the projects where she used social media and bloggers instead of the usual press were the launching of the Lopez Memorial Museum 50th anniversary, Yehuda Berg’s Book Launch and the annual Pasig River run.

Finally Cruz shares her learning from the use of social media and that is every time we wanted to create buzz on the product it should be early or at least a month before its official launch, and it’s not on how many post was created but look at the quality and how it was created. To know the future projects of Susar Cruz and BENPRESS Holdings Corporations and Lopez Group of Companies, follow Lopez Link at Twitter and like Lopez Link at Facebook to join their group page.

Join KC Concepcion and WFP's Auction to Fight Child Hunger in Mindanao

April 23, Manila – KC Concepcion, United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Philippines Ambassador against Hunger, launches an online auction of personal items on 23 April to raise funds to provide schoolchildren in conflict-affected areas of Mindanao with nutritious meals.

With the theme “KC’s Closet Fights Child Hunger,” the auction will include Ms. Concepcion’s personal effects such as bags and dresses featured during some of the important events of her life. The items are available on Ebay Philippines at www.stores.ebay.ph/KCsClosetFightsChildHunger where potential buyers can view the weekly collection. In addition to items from Ms. Concepcion, other celebrity friends will also be joining the cause and auction off their own personal items.

“I am inviting everyone to support this worthy cause. Together we can help give these children who have been affected by the conflict an incentive to attend and stay in school and give them an opportunity for a better future,” said Ms Concepcion.

All proceeds from the auction will support WFP’s Emergency Food for Education program, implemented in close collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, which provides daily hot school meals to 70,000 pupils in the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Lanao del Norte.

“WFP is very pleased with our National Ambassador’s personal initiative to help raise money and awareness for our operations in Mindanao. We are very proud of KC’s dedication to actively fight against child hunger,” said Mr. Stephen Anderson, WFP Country Director and Representative.

Additional contributions are urgently needed to enable WFP to reach affected populations with appropriate food support on a sustained basis through a variety of relief and rehabilitation interventions, including support through everyday Food-for-Education activities.

Since 2006, WFP in the Philippines has been supporting conflict-affected populations in Mindanao, and also supports the Government of the Philippines natural disaster response on a case-by-case basis. WFP is also currently providing emergency relief and early recovery assistance for populations in Luzon affected by Tropical Storm Ketsana and Typhoon Pepeng.

Doing business the Redpages.ph way

Another online marketplace emerges into the cyberspace to give opportunities to businessman and online entrepreneurs. Redpages.ph according to the Creative Online Media Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dennis Ng, the person behind the new online marketplace he saw the opportunity in the services sector by providing a platform for doing business. The website allows small and medium enterprises to sell their products and look for suppliers through the internet.

Now Redpages.ph is working its way in the competing arena as one of the leading and growing online marketplace in the Philippines. “Purchasers need not scan the telephone directory and call each one of them for quotations. All a purchaser has to do is tap the redpages.ph for these needs at the least cost,” Ng said. He claims that there are already 17,000 pre-listed companies in the website. The SMEs are entitled to feature up to five products. Each company can upload products, photos and company profile, and for other company they upgrade their platforms by paying P8,888 annual fee. “The annual payment is but just peanuts compared to the countless opportunities they can avail through the redpages.ph,” Ng said.

Users can view mini-webpages and listings in over 30 industry categories and nearly 350 product categories from agriculture to funerals and so much more and with 1,005 design templates to choose from to suit a particular company’s business while companies who signs for premium (upgraded) account will be given an specific designed website according to their specs.

Creative Online has engaged the services of Dun & Bradstreet, a US-based company that provides international and US business credit information and credit reports, for the authentication process, which is done on an annual basis. “Our primary objectives are to promote e-commerce within the Philippines and utilize the internet to link businesses with international buyers, vendors, trade facilitation bodies and government institutions. We hope to enable Filipino businesses to create a place for themselves in the e-world and get their share out of this fast growing trade channel,” said Ng.

The company is also engaged in search engine optimization by continually updating Yahoo and Google of their listed companies so that searches would automatically redirect to the redpages.ph website and put their companies on top the list.

Ng could only dream that they would someday become the Alibaba of the Philippines, but who knows? Alibaba provides B2B for Chinese firms with an estimated listing of 4 million now although China has 30 million SMEs.
