Understanding HPV or Human Papilloma Virus

Picture this: you wake up one morning, go through your usual hygiene regimen, and in the course of your routine surprisingly detect an unusual lumpy cluster in your private area. If it turns out to be genital warts, then yours is a problem shared by about 32 million people diagnosed with the disease each year.

“Genital warts are more common than people think and a concern that goes beyond aesthetics,” said Dr. Jennifer Co, an Obstetrics-Infectious Disease Specialist at FEU-NRMF Medical Center. "Genital warts are the most common viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) with its incidence increasing by 34% among males and 18% among females in the last ten years (according to UK data). In the US, up to one million new cases are reported annually and the average cost of treatment per year is 171 million dollars," elaborated by Dr. Co.

Also known as venereal warts, genital warts are caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 40 types of HPV affect the genital areas of females and males. While some HPV types may cause genital warts, other HPV types may cause cervical cancer as well as the less common but serious cancers of the vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and head and neck (tongue, tonsils and throat).

HPV can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, oral sex, or even mere skin-to-skin contact of the genital area (non-penetrative sex). According to US data, at least 50% of sexually active people will get genital HPV in their lifetime, and majority of them would not even know they have it since there are no symptoms. Most HPV infections will be cleared by the body's immune system but for those that persist, certain HPV-related diseases may develop such as genital warts.

Warts usually appear one to six months after contact with an infected partner (even if the infected partner has no signs and symptoms), starting out as tiny, soft, moist, pink or gray growths. They develop rapidly and become rough, irregular bumps, which sometimes grow out from the skin on narrow stalks. Warts often grow in clusters with their rough surfaces making them look like a small cauliflower.

“In men, warts manifest on the penis, especially under the foreskin in uncircumcised men, or in the urethra. In women, they occur on the vulva, vaginal wall, cervix, and skin around the vaginal area. Genital warts may also develop in the area around the anus and in the rectum, especially in people who engage in anal sex,” said Dr. Co.
If left untreated, warts may either go away, remain unchanged, or increase in size and number. In some cases, however, warts can be difficult to treat because of episodes of recurrence.

Warts are highly transmissible - more than 75% of people coming into contact with genital warts develop the disease. Condom use does not guarantee total protection as condoms do not cover all areas that may be infected by HPV during sex. Mutual monogamy, on the other hand, effectively reduces the risk of infection. However, even people with only one lifetime partner can still get HPV if their partner has had previous sexual relations.

Here are some tips on how to manage, or better yet, prevent the disease from occurring in the first place.

Abstinence. Foregoing sexual activity is one of the best ways to prevent genital warts. This involves abstaining not only from penetrative sex, but from oral, genital-to-genital, and hand-to-genital contacts or non-penetrative sexual acts as well.
See a doctor. Once you suspect having genital warts, immediately seek medical advice. It is best to consult your doctor for them to rule out any possible serious health problem, and for the doctor to advise you on treating and managing the disease. You should also have your partner examined for HPV-related diseases and treated accordingly.

Improve immunity. A healthy immune system often clears HPV and stops it from causing symptoms or health problems. One way to help boost immunity against HPV is through vaccination. A quadrivalent HPV vaccine, an HPV vaccine for both males and females, helps protect against genital warts, cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer. It can be availed of only upon the prescription of a doctor. It does not treat existing genital warts, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers. It is delivered in 3 separate intramuscular injections over six months. Women should avoid pregnancy during the course of the vaccination.

The brewing rumor against Saridon

Yes, you read the title of my blog entry right it’s been a while since there are rumors in the internet asking if Saridon is safe to take. The analgesic drug is a combination of 150 mg of propyphenazone, 250 mg of paracetamol and 50 mg of caffeine and it is use to relieve headache, muscle pain and tooth ache. Right now Saridon is available in the suburbs and major in Visayas and Mindanao.

With the campaign of fast relief in 15 minutes, it gain major converts of buyers and followers compare to other paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin products. For a person who works in a stressful and headache prone work it’s a good market strategy for me to take the medicine in to consideration, but the question is why does Bayer the manufacturer of the said drug doesn’t distribute it in the Luzon particularly in Metro Manila? That one question gives me a ring to search in the internet about the said product and one was landed on this article about the warning on the use of Saridon published by Horacio Paredes in his blog which Bayer gives their answer to Parades in his online column in Abante.

Checking the content of the drug again caught my attention and that is the 50 mg caffeine, and we all know that it is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that is a psychoactive stimulant when overuse can be addictive and when abused it leads to irregular rapid heart beat or palpitation, gastrointestinal disturbance muscle twitching and respiratory alkalosis which explains article of Conrado R. Banal III in the Philippine Daily Inquirer dated July 28, 2010 on the “Possibly Fatal” Saridon. In Banal’s article it was mention that “the product induced dizziness, fainting, hardness of breathing, low blood pressure, heart failure and—as the term indicates—even death” which according to him it was mentioned by some of his contacts at the pharmaceutical business.

In the article of Dennis Fetalino in Journal Online dated July 24, 2010 he mentioned that Saridon was recalled by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to phenacetin, the original component in the medicine which has a side effect and after-effect of carcinogenesis that is one of the major contributors of cancer, the pull out happens in 1983 which the drug was developed 50 years earlier (1933). Phenacetin was replaced with paracetamol, and it the product was announced reformulated and has massive campaign in VisMin. Yes, commercialism is doing its ways and wonders to get the buyers return to the product despite of the issues thrown to the product, same marketing magic done in food supplements with No Approved Therapeutic Claims.

I end my search disappointed in checking the information about Saridon is that the manufacturer lacks details about the product and the question on why it’s only exclusively distributed in Visayas and Mindanao. With the brewing rumors against the drug I think the Department of Health (DOH) and Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) who has more knowledge on drugs and its content and give possible clarification and information that will educate the buying market specially those in suburbs who’s doctor are themselves and TV advertising because the lack of access to real doctors.

The Commercialism that erases “NO” on No Approved Therapeutic Claims

Lahat ng tao ay may dalawang hiling lang kung kalusugan na ang pinag uusapn, its either they wanted to be healthy or gusto nilang gumaling sa mga sakit nila. Kaya sa panahon ngayon laganap na rin ang mga samu’t saring food supplements at mga iba’t ibang nagmumurahang gamot both herbal na dito gawa sa bansa at mga galing naman sa ibang bansa majority na dyan ang galing sa China. Lahat ay may pangakong nakakagaling o nakakatulong sa kalusugan ng tao sa kabila ng mensaheng “No Approved Therapeutic Claims” o walang kasiguraduhang makakagaling ito. Pero dahil sa mura at palagiang nakikita sa media (television, radio, print ads, internet at billboards) ay nagiging alternatibo ito para sa mga taong umaasang may maitutulong ito para sa kanila.

According to Yahoo Answers ang ibig sabihin ng "No Approved Therapeutic Claims" ay wala itong kasiguraduhang makakagaling ito at para sa Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) na kung saan nagbibigay ng classification sa mga gamot, ang mga nire-require nila na mag lagay ng ganitong sa mga TV ads at pakete ay ang mga na-classify nilang food supplements na hindi kagaya ng ibang gamot na makakatulong sa pag galing. Pero sa kabila ng mga classification na binibigay ng BFAD ay binabago ng media sa pamamagitan ng ads at marketing ang mga  pananaw ng karamihan ng mga gumagamit nito at mga possible buyers at ito ang tinatawag na commercialism, o ang pamamaraan na kung saan magiging epektibo ang pagbenta ng product sa market at kabilang dito ang paggamit ng media platforms.

Sa lagay na ito malaki ang papel ng commercialism sa mga productong tulad nito dahil sa kabila ng mensaheng walang kasiguraduhang makakagaling ayon na rin sa BFAD ay nagiging mabili pa rin ito sa market lalo na sa drugstores dahil bukod sa mura kagaya ng mga generic drugs at over the counter lang din ito at hindi kailangan ng reseta. Bukod sa mga local food supplements at nakikinabang din sa advertising ang mga foriegn products lalo na ang mga "Made in China" na karaniwan nakikita natin sa mga Home TV Shopping. Most of the foreign products are whitening products, diet pills, enhancing supplements and others pero unlike sa mga local food supplements ang mga product na ito ay hindi karaniwan dumadaan sa BFAD, sa madaling salita ang iba rito ay health hazards o maaaring may side effects sa kalusugan. A warning was mentioned in article at the Inquirer.net at the Showbiz and Lifestyle section last 2008, checking the date it was published it shows that matagal nang na-raise ang discussion about the topic na ito pero maliban sa palagiang paglalagay ng No Approved Therapeutic Claims sa bawat commercials, label at mga packages ng mga produktong ito ay patuloy pa rin ang pagtangkilik ng mga Filipino sa kabila ng walang kasiguruhang makakatulong ito para malunasan ang mga sakit nila.

Malaki ang impact sa tao kapag napapanood nila ito sa television, naririnig nila sa radio, at nakikita sa internet, print ads at billboards. lalo na kapag ang mga ang mismong mga idolo o artista ang mga nag-e-endorse nito. Mas may dating ang commercial kapag artista dahil bukod sa may mga followers na ang mga ito na pwedeng ma-convert as buyers ay sila ang pumapangalawang "ina" o "ama" na karaniwang sinusunod ng mga Filipino dahil sa idea na "IDOL" dito pumapasok ang tinatawag na bandwagon campaign. Pangalawa naman na maaaring makakuha ng attention ng possible buyers ay ang testimonial advertising na kung saan either artista o ordinaryong tao ay magbibigay ng opinion at karanasan sa product na kadalasan malaki ang influence sa mga tao, dahil nakikita nila ang sarili nila sa mga ito. Ganito ang laro ng commercialism at malaki ang contribution nito on swaying the opinions and buying power ng mga tao kahit may mensahe na ito No Approved Therapeutic Claims na nakakabit sa dulo ng commercials at sa mga packages nito.

Isang malaking hamon para sa Department of Health (DOH) kung paano buburahin o i-re-reconstruct ang idea ng komersyalismo sa isip ng mga tao sa kabila ng mga suliranin na matataas na presyo ng gamot lalo na ng mga branded. Ito rin kasi ang dahilan kung bakit bumibili ang karamihang mga Pinoy ng food supplements at umaasang mapapagaling sila nito kaysa bumili ng gamot na nasa reseta nila dahil mahal ang mga ito. At para sa mga Pilipinong minsan ay tumatayong mga doktor ng sarili nilang katawan, hindi naman sa pakikialam, if nais natin gumaling hindi ba't nararapat komunsulta tayo sa mga totoong doktor at alamin kung ano ang dapat natin gawin at inumin. Hindi ko kinakalaban ang mga food supplements, ang nais ko lang isang maayos na paglilinaw hindi lang para sa akin kundi para sa lahat.

Exclusive: DOH Sec. Esperanza Cabral on Sex Education and other health concerns

Department of Health Secretary Dr. Esperanza Cabral gives her opinion regarding the growing issue of implementing Sex Education in elementary and school. In a short interview with the most controversial cabinet secretary of the Arroyo administration, Dr Cabral fearlessly answers some issues concerning public health and what people love to debate now – Sex Education.

According to Dr. Cabral DOH is in a support role in terms of the implementation of Sex Education where Department of Education (DepEd) is the lead implementing of the said program is schools. Therefore, the details of the program with regard to its implementation, the curriculum, materials to be used etc. will be better directed at them (DepEd). However, if allowed, as health officials, they will help to explain the rationale behind the program and the need to implement it.

With the large influence of the Catholic Church and with the help of conservative group, the protest continues to stop the implementation of the said program. Dr. Cabral mentioned that the criticism of the program stems mostly from the wrong appreciation of what sex education really means. She also adds that they should look at the curriculum and the materials first; many have instantly condemned it as a tool that will teach our children how to have sexual intercourse. According to her that the allegations of those of who protested to stop the program is not true. “A rational and objective approach will reveal that the teaching of sexuality through age-appropriate modules, which can be tailored even for very young children, is a beneficial program.” Dr. Cabral added.

“The program (sex education) seeks to empower our children by helping them become aware of the concepts of sex and sexuality in a manner that is consistent and compatible with each stage of their development, and thus be able to better protect and appreciate their private rights, as well as make wise and intelligent decisions,” she affirms. Dr. Cabral sees it to defend children from abuse and for teenagers it will teach them to make mature decisions and avoid such problems as early and unwanted pregnancies. The empowerment and concrete benefits to society that this knowledge brings far outweigh the many vague and irrational fears being spread around by its critics.

Aside from Sex Education, I ask three more questions to Dr. Cabral which includes population control, tobacco control and disaster preparedness. According to her DOH does not have a population control program, the more appropriate term being a “reproductive health program”. “We advocate education, information and awareness on such concerns as fertility, responsible parenthood, artificial and natural family planning methods, adolescent health, women’s health and others.” answering the topic on population control.

Second, on tobacco control, Dr. Cabral says that the DOH recognizes the huge public health impact of unabated and poorly regulated tobacco consumption in the country. It is estimated that the direct and indirect costs of ill health caused by tobacco use amounts to almost P200 B a year. “That is why the DOH has stepped up its campaign to help reduce these detrimental effects despite the opposition of our very powerful tobacco industry.” Recently DOH signed an Administrative Order mandating the use of graphic health warnings on the packaging of tobacco products, a method that has proven to be effective in reducing tobacco consumption in many countries. One of the countries that implemented the said graphic health warning is Australia where according to tobacco control advocates it decreases the number of smokers compare with the usual text based warning on cigarette packs.

Lastly, now that it’s back to school and its also rainy season, Dr. Cabral mentioned that DOH is n active in advising the public to prepare for diseases prevalent during this time of year such as water-borne diseases (i.e. diarrhea), influenza, leptospirosis and dengue. We disseminate information on signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, prevention and control of these diseases. “DOH is part of the National Disaster Coordinating Council, is always ready to respond to disasters” Dr. Cabral ended.

Pushing yourself to the limits with The North Face 100

UNAIDS and Parliamentarians appeal lifting of travel restriction on people with AIDS

March 28 Bangkok, Thailand – In the 122nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, parliamentarians from all over the world joined UNAIDS to appeal to the governments of the 52 countries to remove travel restrictions for people living with HIV/AIDS.

In the message of Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS during the opening session last March 28, he strongly stated.“We need your help to build and strengthen governmental response and accountability or we will not reach our goal of Universal Access to HIV prevention, treatment and care services or the Millennium Development Goals—two commitments that your governments have signed onto and which are necessary to overcome HIV.

“I know that the AIDS epidemic consistently places complicated demands on you, the world’s lawmakers. This is because HIV links public health and human rights in a way that requires governments to work harder to achieve health, education, non-discrimination and gender equality for all those vulnerable to or living with HIV. Where we don’t achieve these, the epidemic continues to rage.”

“Law, law enforcement and access to justice are the three components of the legal environment that are critical to achieving these HIV-related human rights. But we have made much less progress in creating the legal and social environments necessary to deliver a future generation free of HIV.”

Sidibé emphasized HIV/AIDS was included on the MDGs (Number 6 –Combat AIDS, Malaria and other diseases), and all the world leaders signed this agreement to achieve this campaign. Unfortunately, the number of human rights violation against people with AIDS increased--including the travel restriction imposed by the 52 countries: Andorra, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Bahrain, Belarus, Belize, Brunei Darussalam, China, Comoros, Cuba, Cyprus, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt , Fiji, India, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Namibia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Qatar, Republic of Moldova, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Solomon Islands, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Turks and Caicos Islands, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen.

Supporting the aims of UNAIDS, IPU gave its support by urging this countries--especially its fellow legislators--to join the fight against discrimination and human rights violation– specifically the people with AIDS/HIV—and to reduce the stigma to those who were infected with the virus. The two organizations encouraged lawmakers to support the legislation that will enforce the protection of people infected with HIV.

Sidibé, challenged the parliamentarians to lead and play a vital role in removing discriminatory laws and restrictions against people with HIV/AIDS.

The 122nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was a 6-day conference (March 27-April) of the members of the IPU. The organization was established in 1889 and has 143 countries as members. IPU gained permanent observer status in the United Nations.
