Earth Hour: Beyond the Switch Off

It’s been 4 years since I am actively advocating and supporting Earth Hour, it was in 2008 when I did a blog entry about the annual switch off that started in Australia in 2004. The Earth Hour activity happens every March and it was done by a symbolical switching off of lights of different establishments and areas to symbolize the importance of energy conservation and what life would be if we don’t manage the use of energy properly.

(With WWF-Philippines CEO Lory Tan during Earth Hour 2010)

This year, World Wild Fund (WWF) and Earth Hour organization goes beyond the one hour switch off from 8:30PM – 9:30PM, they encourage everyone to go beyond the annual activity and make it a habit to do something more earth-friendly activity with their Earth Hour + campaign. The 2009 Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng tragedy was an eye opener for everyone after seeing the wrath of nature because of climate change and more with mismanagement of waste products in the urban area especially plastics and non-biodegradable products. Now several establishments and municipalities all over the Philippines are doing beyond the Earth Hour activity, they stop or minimize the usage of plastics and promote the use of eco bags and Muntinlupa showed other municipalities that they can actually do it. Now with the inflation of diesel and gasoline and the stress caused by traffic, does commuting, carpool, biking and walking is a better option for us to minimize cost and conserving energy usage?

Here in the Philippines, particularly in Metro Manila, the annual switch off will happen at the SM Mall of Asia Globe area and there will be lots of activity and talk that will start on 6pm beyond the switch on by 9:30PM. For those who cannot come please do participate by switching off lights and other appliances in your homes and enjoy the ambiance by looking how beautiful the sky during night time. But the challenge doesn’t end by switching off, instead it challenges each one on what they can contribute on protecting the environment, and proper usage of energy. There are lots of things you can do, we saw it in all forms of media, it’s a matter of how you can execute it.

Lastly, for those who wanted to extend their support to WWF-Philippines, by texting EHOUR to 5333 (P20 for GLOBE & P15 for SMART) to receive an MMS picture. Or texting EHOUR ON to 5333 to subscribe to the SMS info service and receive selected green tips from WWF. (P2.50 per text). Or every time you do transaction on BDO ATM don’t forget to donate P5 to WWF-Philippines and same for those who enjoyed traveling don’t forget to click on donate to WWF-Philippines where the amount varies in the miles you will travel.
