X rating didn't stop AmBisyon 2010

An X-rating didn’t stop 20 independent filmmakers from showcasing their visions of the country in the successful theater screening of “amBisyon2010,” the film project of ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Dream Theater last Tuesday (April 6).

Nineteen of the 20 directors led by Cannes Film Festival awardees Brillante Mendoza and Raymond Red and TV and film director Jeffrey Jeturian were present in the by-invitation event featuring 20 short films on the ten issues at stake in the 2010 Philippine national elections.

The public will have a chance to view the films in the five-part TV special of “amBisyon2010” starting Friday (April 9), 6pm on ANC (SkyCable channel 27) and on Thursday (April 15) at 10:30pm on Studio 23.

The “amBisyon2010” had an earlier setback when the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board gave Jeturian’s “Ganito Tayo Ngayon, Paano Na Tayo Bukas?” and “Mendoza’s “Ayos Ka,” X ratings.

Jeturian’s movie follows a newspaper with a headline on the administration’s economic successes from the time it was delivered to a homeowner to when it is used to wipe feces from the foot of a cart-pushing vendor. Mendoza’s film, meanwhile, features contrasting lyrics and visuals on the kind of life in the country.

The MTRCB claimed Mendoza’s film is “injurious to the prestige of the Republic of the Philippines and its people" while Jeturian's piece "undermined the faith and confidence of the people in government." The board later lifted the “X” rating for Mendoza’s film and rated it “R.”

The short films, which bravely and creatively tackle pressing issues like education, corruption, justice, and population, were created to help Filipinos choose the right leader to vote in the coming polls.

“Not only is it (amBisyon2010) supposed to inspire but more importantly, it’s supposed to provoke people into thinking again about their future,” said Paolo Villaluna, the co-creator and one of the directors of “amBisyon2010.”
