Action, mystery and humor combined on Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes

Warner Bros Picture with Village Roadshow Pictures and Silver Pictures brings the famous detective story on the silver screen beginning on January 8, Sherlock Holmes. Starring Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes), Jude Law (Dr. John Watson), Rachel McAdams (Irene Adler), Kelly Reilly, (Mary Morstan) and Mark Strong (Lord Blackwood), directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin with screenplay by Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg. The movie is based to Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional character “Sherlock Holmes the story was created by Lionel Wigram the same person who produced Harry Potters: Half Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix.

The story takes place in London, in 1891 where secret orders and cult is rampant and governing the society in terror. This should be the year where the Lord Blackwood was arrested and sentenced to death. Blackwood fakes his death and continues the cult he created and plans to rule over London with the devices he created. With Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson who became London’s superhero they race to stop Lord Blackwood’s dark plans including his human sacrifice rituals where he was found before his first arrest. With Irede Adler, Holmes love interest, who joins them to haunt down Blackwood. They follow Blackwood’s footsteps and discover that the black magic he is showing from the death of Sir Thomas, father of Blackwood who died by drowning on the bath tub because of paralysis and his fake death that everything is science and not magic. Lord Blackwood and Sherlock Holmes meet again on the constructed Tower Bridge in London where Holmes enumerates Blackwood’s “magic” which Holmes says that it is all bunch of science and trickery. And at the end Lord Blackwood finally meets his real death hanged at the Tower Bridge.

Detective film is more on mysteries and talkies which may be boring for others but what makes Sherlock Holmes beautiful, is how they created the milieu from the costumes, building and set up it reflects how London looks like in 1800s as visualized from Doyle's novel. Downey adopts the sarcasm and wits of Holmes which I find him perfect for the role same with Law. The execution of the scenes and the sound details adds up to the mystery, action and humor of the film that makes it more exciting until the death of Lord Blackwood and more with his executions of his tricks.

Sherlock Holmes is produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey, and Dan Lin and it was originally screened in the United States, UK, and other countries during Christmas week but here in the Philippines because of the annual Metro Manila Film Festival, the film will be shown beginning on January 8, 2010 in all Ayala Cinemas and the rest of theaters world wide.
