World Vision targets 11,000 kids back to school with “Count Me In” project

Up to date, over 112, 000 Filipino children return to school through World Vision child sponsorship. At the same time, their families continue to receive livelihood assistance and their families are now closer to self-sustainability than ever before. Everything was made possible by supporters and sponsors of World Vision as they join the fight against poverty and giving the children a better future by bringing them back to school.

Auction for Action: A UNICEF Fundraising Online Auction Project

UNICEF, a United Nation agency that focuses on child education and protection against violence, exploitation and AIDS will launch a fundraising program in partnership with EBay Philippines, Ayala Malls and Cibo which they called Auction for Action. This online engagement will raise funds for UNICEF by means of auctioning artworks, furniture, paintings, jewelry, photography and other experiential packages from reputable artists, celebrities and organizations that support the agency and advocates for children education and protection. TV Personality Daphne Oseña-Paez headed the said fund raising. The online auction for UNICEF will happen at the on www.ebay.ph/unicef beginning May 25.

Lactum launches 365 Mother’s Day Project

In line with the Panatag Mom campaign of Lactum, they also launched a new project and this time to celebrate Mother’s Day longer for a year. Lactum’s 365 Mother’s Day Project aims to share the sweetest thing that every mothers share and that is the joy of having their babies.

With this campaign, they encourage mothers to upload or send the video of the children saying “Happy Mother’s Day” on a very unique, cute or sweetest way they can do. Videos can be uploaded directly to www.365mothersday.com or send it to happy365mothersday@yahoo.com. All videos will be approved by the website owner before it will be on public, same thing to those who send their contribution online.

Support He Cares Foundation, a Street Children Caring Center

Donate a brick for their home, this the recent campaign of He Cares Foundation, a street children caring center located at the 11 Acuna Drive Philvirra Homes in Project 8 Quezon City. The foundation was built by full-time lay missionaries, Joe Dean Sola and his wife, Ardis in 1996. Now there are already 6 full time volunteers that work on five (5) major programs of the He Cares Foundation.

Balik-Loob sa Diyos (Back to God) Program – being a missionary founded foundation He Cares aims to promote and evangelize the Good News of the Lord to those who are in need.

Balik-Kalusugan (Back to Health) Program – He Cares prioritizes the importance of health through their medical and feeding program.

Balik-Bahay (Back to Home) Program – Most of the street children they found were lost, the foundation helps them to bring them back to their family.


Balik-Aral (Back to School) Program – With the support from individuals and organizations, He Cares Foundation helps the street children to be their scholars and bring them back to school.


Balik-Hanapbuhay (Back to Work) Program – He Cares Foundation also conducted livelihood programs for the mothers and women in the community to have additional income for their family.

All 5 programs consist of various activities to its beneficiaries which was done daily,weekly, monthly, and yearly.

With the 5 programs, He Cares Foundation gives the opportunity and the option on where the supporters can channel their support. They are open for cash donations which can be deposited at the Bank of Philippine Islands peso savings account #1954-0287-43 (Congressional Ave., Quezon City Branch, bank code - 0195) or in Paypal at hecaresfoundation@gmail.com. They are also accepting donations in kind like clothes, bed sheets, school supplies and others. UN World Food Programme Assists 250,000 Food-Insecure Persons Monthly in Conflict-Affected Central Mindanao

Contrary to some recent media reports that incorrectly quote the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) as stating that 250,000 displaced persons are “starving” in Mindanao, WFP would like to clarify the situation as follows:

WFP, in close partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other government departments, is currently providing food assistance, through community-managed livelihood activities, on a monthly basis to 250,000 food-insecure persons in conflict-affected areas of Central Mindanao. These communities were previously displaced due to the upsurge in conflict in August 2008. Starvation is an extreme form of hunger and the prevailing situation in Mindanao, while requiring ongoing support to strengthen resilience, cannot be categorized as “starvation”. Food-insecure people are those who do not have sustainable access to food due to socio-economic reasons as well as shocks such as conflict and natural disasters.

WFP’s current programme of assistance in Central Mindanao is based on a Food Security Assessment that was carried out in January 2010, which highlighted food security constraints among internally displaced persons (IDPs) returning to their places of origin. In line with government priorities, the main focus of WFP assistance is on “early recovery” activities in the IDP return areas.

Based on the recently-released 2010 Global Hunger Index, produced by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Philippines as a whole, ranks 34th out of 84 countries analyzed, with the 84th country having the worst hunger index. The Philippines has been classified as having a “serious” hunger index, as opposed to other countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa classified with “alarming” and “extremely alarming” hunger indices.

The Government of the Philippines is consolidating and expanding social safety net programmes aimed at enhancing resilience of the most vulnerable throughout the country, including in conflict-affected areas of Mindanao. WFP supports these efforts.

The Body Shop and ECPAT unite against Child Sex Trafficking

The Body Shop, one of the leading beauty and wellness boutique partners with ECPAT International (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children For Sexual Purposes) in their latest campaign to stop sex trafficking among the children and the youth. With the battle cry ‘Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People’, The Body Shop will help to raise awareness among their buyers and raise funds to support ECPAT in their projects. The said campaign officially started last August 13, 2010 and it will be done in all The Body Shop boutiques around the world.

According to the reports there are 2.5 million people trafficked every year and human trafficking is considered as the world’s third-largest criminal industry/crime next to illegal drugs and guns. From that numbers, the estimated number of children and youth who is involved in this activity reaches to 1.2 million most of them were sexually abused and exploited. Despite of the existing law, like R.A. 9208 here in the Philippines that was passed in 2003 and the anti child pornography that was recently passed by our legislators, it seems that both doesn’t have fangs to put halt on the present situation of sex trafficking in the country. Some of the reports stated that most of victims are scarred to come out and report it to the authorities, and others are not aware of the existing law that governs their rights and security.

With the latest campaign of The Body Shop, they wanted to create awareness about the issues on sex trafficking through their products and posters. They already indicated several products where they will be giving all the proceeds to ECPAT to support their projects. Products includes of Soft Hands Kind Hearts Hand Cream and The Body Shop Canvass-Shoulder Bag that has Stop Sex Trafficking logo that will make users of the bag as walking “billboard” of this campaign.

Aside from the products, The Body Shop created a petition site (http:/www.thebodyshop.com/stop) for those who wanted to give support on this campaign, and flyers will be distributed in their boutiques for their buyers who wanted to signed up and draw their hands. All the collected petitions from the online and flyers will be given to the respective government/leaders where The Body Shop boutique is located.

Importante para sa isang developing country tulad ng Pilipinas lalo na at humaharap ito sa mga issue tulad ng kahirapan, gutom, problema sa edukasyon, laganap pa rin ang domestic violence at pang aabuso sa karapatan ng kababaihan at bata, suliranin pa rin ang pagtaas ng bilang ng sakit tulad ng AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis at maraming iba, at patuloy pa rin ang pagkasira ng kalikasan, marahil nararapat din na maging mapanuri na rin tayo kung sino ang nararapat maupo at manguna sa ating bansa na may mga panukala at platapormang masasagot ang issue na ito.

Noong taong 2000 ay nagsama sama ang mga world leaders ay bumuo ng 8 United Nation Millennium Development Goals:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
2. Achieve universal primary education.
3. Promote gender equality and empower women.
4. Reduce child mortality.
5. Improve maternal health.
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
7. Ensure environmental sustainability.
8. Develop a global partnership for development.

At dito sa Pilipinas importante ang pito sa goals na ito na dapat isa-alang-alang mabuti ng mga taong bubuto kung nasa plataporma ito ng mga tatakbo sa 2010 Election, hindi lang presidente ang kailangan natin, kundi isang leader ng bansang kikilos at hihimukin ang mga kababayan nitong kumilos para labanan ang problema ng kahirapan.

Magkakaiba man ang aming mga tinig, iisa ang aming pangarap. Iisa ang aming layunin at mahalagang hangarin - ang wakasan ang matinding kahirapan at pagkagutom.

Kami ay naninindigan, nananawagan na agad wakasan ang kahirapan upang makamtan ang kapayapaan at kaunlaran na nararapat para sa aming minamahal na bayan.
