I am a sucker of musical performance, it is rare to see singers and dancers act on the big screen, same as actors dancing and singing. As for the followers of Cher and Christina Aguilera it was dream come true to see them together performing and acting in Columbia Pictures’ Burlesque. The movie will be shown in all cinemas beginning February 2 and it was directed by Steven Antin. The musical drama film won as the Best Original Song in the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.
Burlesque follows the fulfillment of the dreams of two women; Tess (Cher) to save her Burlesque Lounge from shutting down and Ali (Aguilera) to show her talent and to be a star. By their passion, that two women crossed path and help each other to fulfill what they wanted.
This was the first ever lead role for a movie done by Christina Aguilera, and she did it pretty well. I like the way she played her role a witty, funny and ambitious Ali who will do everything and anything just to be on top of the stage. While Cher, she is truly an icon as multi awarded and over-all performer. I was so impressed in one of her performance in the movie.
The story of Burlesque was simple, but the way it was executed made a difference, including the choice of songs, actors and the set up. Not much of a spoiler, I was hoping for a Christina and Cher showdown but it didn’t happen in the movie. But expect “full vocal power” performance from the two of them in the movie.
Burlesque also stars Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Alan Cumming, Peter Gallagher, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci.
Cher is back on the big screen to do a musical drama movie with Columbia Pictures entitled Burlesque. The film was written and directed by Steven Antin. The movie follows the journey of two women who is deeply in love with music and by accident they met each other in the Burlesque Lounge. Ali Rose (Aguilera), who followed her dream to be a singer and found herself as waitress in the lounge. And Tess (Cher), the owner of the Burlesque Lounge who hired Ali Rose to be a waitress in her place and later discovered her talent. But both women is having their own problem in life; Tess seeing her club going bankrupt and Ali Rose having enemies as she goes up to reach her dreams.
Cher, who already proved herself in acting where she won awards from the Golden Globe and the Academy from the 1987 movie, entitled Moonstruck where she played the iconic Loretta Castorini. According to the filmmakers of Burlesque, Cher would respond to the role of Tess because the character is both familiar and contemporary, somebody with a lot to give who’s in danger of having her dream taken away. “Tess is one of a zillion people losing their shirt. That’s a very real thing happening right now and I thought it was an interesting thing for this character to be experiencing.” Antin added.
Antin also explained that Cher embodied the character of an empowered woman who can face all the ups and downs of her life and take all the challenges that comes her way; good or bad. In this way Cher compliments to the flow to the story and with the character played by Aguillera.
Finally, Cher, through her incomparable voice, her trademark wit, and her charismatic presence, has established herself as a tireless, compelling performer of inestimable talent and unstoppable drive. Her contributions in music, television, stage and film have garnered countless accolades and awards and the admiration of generations of fans.

“It takes a Legend to Make a Star” --- This one caught my attention, it’s been awhile since we have this kind of movie from Moulin Rouge, Dream Girls, and Chicago. Two musical icons in their generations will collide in order to create good movie like Burlesque – Cher and Christina Aguilera. The musical film is directed and written by Steve Antin and will be out by Thanksgiving in other countries while in the Philippines it will be on February 2011.
The musical film follows Ali Rose (Christina Aguilera), a small-town girl who wanted to escape her present status in life and ends up working in The Burlesque Lounge as a waitress. The Burlesque Lounge is a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue. She met Tess (Cher), the club’s proprietor and headliner and discovers her talent. Ali’s dream come true as she performed in the stage, but as she goes up everyone tries to bring her down and snatch the limelight from her.
Burlesque also features Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Alan Cumming, Peter Gallagher, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci. It will be shown in US and other countries by Thanksgiving Day and here in the Philippines will be on February 2, 2011.
