Kalikasan at Buhay sa Tabing Dagat (Environment and Life by the Sea) was launched in December 2010 and targets listeners in Sablayan, Mindoro and in Quezon, Taytay and other towns in northern Palawan.
30-minute radio episodes now air each Saturday at 9AM on 103.3 in Sablayan, 9AM on 93.5 in Quezon and 1PM on DZVT 1395kHz for northern Palawan. Slated to air until March, all 16 episodes feature environmental trivia, drama segments, eco-tips and in-depth interviews with some of the country’s top environmental experts, ranging from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) member Dr. Rosa Perez to leading Filipino marine scientist and coral reef expert Dr. Al Licuanan.
At the end of the fourth episode, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) plans to hold localized community discussions to gauge enhancements in the level of environmental awareness among each area’s target listeners. The Coral Triangle Support Programme (CTSP) and WWF-Philippines developed and implemented the radio program with local partner Foundation for Information Technology and Education (FITED) through the generous support of the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) and Coca-Cola Philippines.
“As a communications platform, radio has the power to instantly disseminate ideas. Its fluid nature allows it to both highlight problems while showcasing solutions. To maximize impact, we also hope the show can be aired in other coastal sites nationwide,” explains WWF-CTSP Communicator Marlyn Santiago. After all, there’s no better goal than to disseminate solutions to improve Filipino lives.”
