From the producer of The Polar Express, Monster House and Disney’s A Christmas Carol, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey partners with Walt Disney Pictures brings a movie adaptation of the sci-fi novel created by book by Berkeley Breathed entitled Mars Needs Moms. The sci-fi movie that was directed by Simon Wells and features the voices of Seth Green, Seth Robert Dusky, Tom Everett Scott, Joan Cusack, Elisabeth Harnois, Dan Fogler, Dee Bradley Baker and Mindy Sterling will be showing in all cinemas nationwide beginning March 16. Available in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular format.
The sci-fi movie follows the nine year old Milo (Dusky), whose mom (Cusack) was abducted by Martians in order to take care of the Martian babies along with other mothers. With the help of Gribble (Folger) with his bionic pet named Two-Cat (Baker) and Ki (Harnois) a rebellious Martian girl, they will help Milo to rescue his mom and the rest of the mothers and bring them back to earth.
With all the equipments and visual effects available now, Zemeckis explained that he was happy in the creation of Mars Needs Moms, making it visually appealing and more futuristic. “The advancement is one thousand-fold. The team that created ‘Mars Needs Moms’ is the best performance-capture digital facility on the Earth. The movie—its imagery and the story the technology allows us to tell—is absolutely beyond anything you’ve seen before.” He explained.
“One of the great bonuses of doing a movie in performance capture is that it’s in 3D all the time. We have to make our movie in 3D just to do it. We now design the movie to be presented in 3D, too. And when you’re doing a 3D movie that’s completely virtual like ‘Mars Needs Moms,’ the 3D can be more spectacular than you can do in any other form. We spend a lot of time and energy designing our movies for the 3D experience for the audience.” Zemeckis shares that the most important aspect of the movie is its art form and making it special to cater all ages.
Aside from the outer space, Gribble’s liar is one of the things that movie goers and 3D aficionados should be expecting. Director Simon Wells shares that in that part of the movie with the enhancement done in 3D that can see Gribble’s liar with more details with all its gadgets, moving mechanisms and secret monitors.
With the help of 3D animation, Mars Needs Moms will be one of the sci-fi movies that all ages will be excited to see. It will be showing in all cinemas nationwide beginning March 16, available in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular format and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

In line with its release on February, Walt Disney Pictures will be having a sneak preview of the most anticipated hair-larious movie of the year – Tangled! The sneak preview will happen on January 24 & 25 on selected theaters and ticket cost is regular admission price.
Tangled is twisted version of Rapunzel, which follows the tale of a young woman, named Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore) who was imprisoned by an evil witch in a tower. With her long magical golden hair and pet chameleon, they met and held captive the prince (charming) of bandit, Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi). With the help of Flynn, Rapunzel escapes the tower and they are set to a more fun adventure that will give a beautiful twist on the Brothers Grimm famous fairytale.
“Tangled is a wonderful story of two people who don’t really know who they are yet, and in the course of the film, they both discover their destiny. We wanted to break some of the stereotypes that had been done before. Flynn is a guy who’s been there, done that, and seen it all. Rapunzel is a sheltered, naïve-but-smart girl who hasn’t been there, hasn’t done that, and hasn’t seen anything! He helps bring her to a place where she can see herself more clearly, and she helps bring him to a place where he can change some of the mistakes he’s made in life. Together, they fill in what’s missing in each other.” producer Roy Conli described the film.
Tangled was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and will be showing on February 2 in all theaters nationwide.

Walt Disney Animation Studios brings the most hair-raising movie of the year as they put a twist on the famous German fairy tale Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm and created Tangled. The comedy animated film that is available in both 3D and regular format starting February 12 features the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy. The movie is directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard.
From the premise of Rapunzel the story follows the Princess Rapunzel (Moore) who was held prison by a witch named Mother Gothel (Murphy) in a tower. Rapunzel grew her hair long but opposite from the original story her long blond hair has magic and she can control it whatever she wants. With her pet Pascal, a chameleon waits for his prince to come and rescue her from the tower. Unfortunately, the charming prince she is waiting for is not a royal prince instead a prince of bandit named Flynn Rider (Levi). Rapunzel proposed that she will help Flynn if he will help her escape from the evil witch. Flynn accepted the proposal and their adventure begins with lots of twist and turns including their hilarious misfortunes.
Director Nathan Greno shares that Tangled is different from the usual Rapunzel movie that everyone saw before. “We flipped it on its head to make a movie that’s relevant, fresh and different. My co-director Byron Howard and I both love the classic Disney films, and we wanted to go back to this cool, retro look from the fifties, and mix it with contemporary storytelling, pacing, action and humor. This puts a whole new layer on this kind of story.” Greno explained.
“The scope of this movie is gigantic—with horse chases and sword fights, prison breaks and floods. The story gave us a chance to take modern-day moviemaking sensibilities and pump it into a classic story.” Directed Howard Byron added.
According to the two directors they help to steer the birth of Tangled in the big screen where the idea was already in the mind of Walt Disney himself on how to bring the magic of Rapunzel and bring it to the larger audience. As for Greno they wanted to balance out the characters in the story to make it more dynamic and fun to watch. “She needed someone to be her foil and equal—a character who could hold his own against this quirky, intelligent girl. She’s very smart, but she’s not worldly. She has this limited world view and doesn’t really know what’s out there. She knows she wants to see those floating lights and figure out what they are. That’s where Flynn Rider comes in. He’s the worldly, sharp guy who’s been around the block a few times and knows how the world works. Throughout the film, they both fill in what’s missing in each other.” He explained.
According to Dan Fogelman, the screenwriter of Tangled, the two directors wanted to tell a classic Disney story in a completely new way that would fit the style of CG animation. This includes adding comedy with 21st-century sensibility in the story to make it more appealing and balance.
Tangled was already released last November in the US and other countries, while in the Philippines it will be released on February 2 inline for Valentines Day offering of Walt Disney here in the country.

Jack Black talks about Gulliver’s Travel
20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. Pictures bring back the 18th century novel of Jonathan Swift entitled Gulliver’s Travel. With a modern touch and humor, Gulliver’s Travel stars Jack Black as Lemuel Gulliver the pretentious mailroom clerk who accidentally entered the island of the Lilliputs. The film is directed Rob Letterman.
Here’s the interview of Jack Black sharing his experience about doing the film Gulliver’s Travel.
Q: What is your character Gulliver like?
Jack Black: “He’s always aspiring for something bigger and better. But he doesn’t have the courage to put himself out there. Fear is his obstacle. But once he gets to Lilliput, he’s like a king. In New York, Gulliver feels really small and wants to do big things, but he’s afraid to make it happen. When he lands in Lilliput, he starts to feel really big, but it’s a feeling based on false pretenses.”
Q: Are you familiar with the book when you were a kid?
Black: “I was fond of the story when I was a kid. But I never read the unabridged version back then; it’s pretty dense material. It’s only fairly recently that I read the actual book. Once they offered it to me, I said yes, and then I read the book and it was a double yes.”
Q: How did you adapt the movie for this generation?
Black: “There is a lot of material in the book that didn’t make it into the movie because there are some very spicy passages. It gets pretty violent and graphic. The original piece is not really for kids; it was a satire for adults.”
Q: Has having children changed you?
Black: “It is extremely rewarding and challenging. They are magical creatures and I love them to death. You need to spend time with them. You can’t just go and work on the computer—you need to give them attention and listen to them and play with them and those crazy pretending games take a lot of energy.”
Q: In the movie, Gulliver relished much fame, are you like him?
Black: “It is always fun to meet new people who have enjoyed my work. Sometimes it can be exhausting if you have had a long day and what would take one minute ends up taking an hour because you have to sign pictures and talk to people but for the most part it is very gratifying. I like it because I am always being thanked and high fived, there is a lot of positivity coming my way.”
Gulliver’s Travel is a live-action family-comedy adventure film. It is 3D and regular format beginning January 8, 2011.

Aside from the most anticipated movie Tangled, Walt Disney Pictures brings another twisted tale this 2011 and this time its Shakespeare’s. Gnomeo & Juliet is loosely based from the famous Romeo & Juliet of William Shakespeare. The comical-animation film that will be available in both 3D and regular format features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet. It is directed by Kelly Asbury.
Like the original novel. Gnomeo & Juliet follows the love story of the two characters facing the obstacles rooted from family feud. This time it is no longer renaissance setting but more on the garden where gnomes lives and here the story begins.
The movie also features the voices of Jason Statham, Ashley Jensen, Dame Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Patrick Stewart, Matt Lucas, Stephen Merchant, Jim Cummings, Ozzy Osbourne, Dolly Parton and Hulk Hogan. The 3D animated film will also release movie soundtrack that includes songs from Elton John, Lady Gaga, Nelly Furtado, and Kiki Dee.

Walt Disney Pictures brings the sequel of the 1982 film Tron that stars Jeff Bridges. Tron Legacy reprises the role of Kevin Flynn and Clu which were played by Bridges. The sci-fi action film also stars Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett and Bruce Boxleitner. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski and showing beginning December 18.
Twenty years after the Kevin Flynn disappeared, Sam (Hedlund) his son returned to their arcade shop. Accidentally Sam was transported to the grid with the machine that Kevin created. He discovered the creation of his father, including Clu who is now ruling the place while his father hides himself away from him. With Quorra (Wilde) and his father, they will try to stop Clu and return to the human world.
Tron Legacy is better on 3D format because of the “neon” lights that is part of the characters costume. The visual effects and the scoring played a very important role in the movie to strengthen the storyline. Good thing that Disney revisits the 1981 film by putting some footage so that the movie goers who haven’t seen the first movie can see how it was started.
Before I watched the sequel, I had my chance to see the first one, and all I can say that except from the visual effects that changed and improved, the storyline and the conflict remained consistent. Even there was a change the director.
Tron Legacy will be showing in all cinemas nationwide beginning December 18, and during the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival, SM IMAX will still show the movie, until its return in all cinemas by January 2011. The film is distributed Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines.

Now the 3D is now becoming a fad in both animation and movies, animation studios in Mexico and Philippines sign an agreement for a technology transfer and cultural exchange program. Animex from Mexico will be partnering with Cutting Edge Productions in the Philippines to work on a creative synergy that leads to creation of multicultural and original animated contents, and new business models. With the said agreement both animation companies will benefit from it, and it was initiated by Toon Boom, supplier of digital media solutions and the Embassy of Mexico in the Philippines.
“The Philippines has the most talented animators. They’re much more talented compared to animators in the rest of Asia and the world. From a purely artistic creative point of view, the people here are very gifted. However, they’re not getting their proper share of revenue. What we need now are more local owners of animation studios who have a big vision; who can raise enough financial resources to be able to take on a more leadership role versus being at the bottom of the food chain,” says Joan Vogelesang, Toon Boom President and Chief Executive Officer. Vogelesang sees the creativeness and the potential of the Filipino animators that is worth showing in the international scene, but because of the low budget it hinders them on what possible progress and fame that will bring them.
Vogelesang sees the opportunity to bridge the Cutting Edge Production the maker of “Dayo Sa Mundo Ng Elementalia” to a Mexican multi-awarded animation studio – Animex that will help them to exchange ideas and concepts that will create fusion of Filipino-Mexican designs and animations. “We are confident that the linkage and exchange program between Animex and Cutting Edge will be a big flagship initiative in the Philippines,” she adds.
Cutting Edge Productions is headed by Jessie Lasaten, a m ulti-awarded film composer and musical arranger. The film Dayo that they created is a 2D animation film landed as one of the finalist of the 2008 Manila Film Festival where it won Best Sound by Albert Idioma and Whannie Dellosa, Best Visual Effects by Robert Quilao, Best Musical Score by Jessie Lasaten and Best Theme Song by Lipad by Jessie Lasaten and Artemio Abad Jr., performed by Lea Salonga.
While Animex is known with their multi-awarded 2D animations like “Roncho: the bad luck dog” (2003) – series aired on LocoMotion Channel in Miami, USA; “La Leyenda dela Nahuala” (2007) – Mexico’s first film done in DTS format; “Nikte”(2009) – a film distributed by Universal Pictures; and “La Revolucion de Juan Escopeta”, an Aeroplano Films and Animex co-production to be completed in November 2010. The animation studio has already established a division in Hollywood, California, is also collaborating with Mexican-American actor and director Edward James Olmos in his first animated Mexican feature entitled “Il Americano” - a hilarious tale about a flock of birds migrating from Mexico to the United States.
“Animex and Cutting Edge certainly share common grounds: birth pains, corporate values and advocacies. For the cultural exchange program, we are selecting the best candidates from both our teams. We could have animators from Mexico and the Philippines switch places twice or thrice a year,” says Ricardo Arnaiz, Animex producer and director.
As part of their partnership, Cutting Edge Productions and Animex will be doing a 3D animated short film that will explore the similarities of the Filipino and Maexican culture and tradition. Ricardo Arnaiz, Animex’s Producer and Director and Jerry Santiago one of the directors of Cutting Edge Productions will lead the said Filipino/Mexican project.
The said agreement between Animex and Cutting Edge Productions happens between Animex Director General Eduardo Jimenez, Cutting Edge Finance and Business Development Director Erwin Escubio, Animex Producer and Director Ricardo Arnaiz, Cutting Edge President and CEO Jessie Lasaten, and Animex Production Director Nathan Sifuentes with Joan Vogelesang, Toon Boom President and CEO.
